Shiga Kogen is completely different from Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen. There is no "town" here. Instead, Shiga is a collection of 18 different ski areas connected by lifts and shuttle buses, located deep within a National Park.
Accommodation consists almost entirely of large hotels situated directly at the base of the lifts. The experience is all about skiing. If you want nightlife, shopping, or village strolls, this is not the place. If you want empty slopes and strictly nature, it is paradise.
Choosing Your Base Area
1. Ichinose Area
The Central Hub
Ichinose consists of two main fields: Ichinose Family and Ichinose Diamond. This is the closest thing Shiga has to a "central village."
- Pros: Largest concentration of hotels, a few izakayas (very rare in Shiga), and central access to the rest of the mountain.
- Cons: Can be crowded with school trips during weekdays. Hotels are older (Bubble-era architecture).
- Best For: First-timers who want a balance of convenience and access.
2. Okushiga Kogen
The Premium End
Located at the far end of the valley, Okushiga Kogen feels exclusive and separated from the rest.
- Pros: High-end accommodation (Okushiga Kogen Hotel), generally English-speaking staff, uncrowded premium slopes.
- Cons: Far from the other ski areas (takes 45 mins to get back to the start).
- Best For: Couples or families wanting a quiet, upscale resort experience.
3. Yakebitaiyama (Prince Hotels)
The Efficient Mega-Structure
The entire mountain of Yakebitaiyama is served by three massive Prince Hotel buildings (East, South, West).
- Pros: True ski-in/ski-out. The lifts are literally outside the locker room. Very reliable quality and service.
- Cons: Felt somewhat corporate. You are trapped in the hotel for dinner (buffets).
- Best For: Serious skiers who want to maximize slope time.
The Hotel Lifestyle
Staying in Shiga Kogen means generally accepting the "half-board" lifestyle. Since there are almost no independent restaurants, most bookings include breakfast and dinner at the hotel.
This creates a very structured day:
- 07:30 - Buffet Breakfast
- 08:30 - First Lift
- 16:30 - Lifts Close / Hotel Onsen
- 18:00 - Buffet Dinner
- 20:00 - Quiet time / Sleep
It is a detox from city life. Bring books, cards, and good company.
